The Google security team has enabled forward secrecy in its HTTPS services by default, so that captured messages can’t be decrypted retroactively. Even though Gmail went to a secure HTTPS connection by default last year, encrypted files could still be captured in their unreadable form and broken years later, when computers are much faster.

Other HTTPS Google services include Docs and Google+, as well as SSL Web search. All these services are now forward secret when HTTPS is turned on. Initially, only Chrome and Firefox will use forward secrecy by default with Google services, because Internet Explorer doesn’t support Google’s combination of the RC4 authentication and ECDHE key exchange mechanisms. “We hope to support IE in the future,” the security team says … click this to continue

The music streaming site Grooveshark is no stranger to the ire of the music industry. The service’s approach to hosting and streaming songs has resulted in a barrage of criticism from industry players, as well as a handful of lawsuits.

The latest lawsuit is actually the second one to be filed by Universal Music Group, the biggest of the major record companies. This time, UMG is suing over a claim that Grooveshark employees were required to bulk-upload music files to the service, and even got a monetary bonus for beating their upload quota. Twitter is cutting deals with third-party providers of services that re-syndicate Tweets online, the company announced today, and the first one is Austin, Texas-based Mass Relevance. Mass Relevance has access to the full Twitter fire hose and offers its customers a filtering, curation and display technology to add Tweets about a TV show, political campaign or other event to their web pages.

The potential for syndicated Tweets is big, but hopefully Twitter won’t go after everyone else in the world who puts Tweets on other websites as a part of their business. The company doesn’t seem to be welcoming interested parties to license those rights either. A week after version 2.5 of Google’s tweaks to the search rank algorithm – A.K.A. Panda – rolled out across the Web, new data from Searchmetrics show that the changes appear to be rolling back. Panda is designed to reduce the impact of content farms and other low-quality sites that game Google’s page ranking algorithm.

Out of the 30 domains that were hit hardest by last week’s changes, 10 of them have recovered to receive more traffic than before Panda 2.5, with another 10 restored to 80-90% of their pre-Panda 2.5 visibility.
