Twitter Ads For Sale, No Sales Rep Required

The company is partnering with American Express to set up a long-awaited self-service advertising program. Initially, the program will only be available to merchants who use and accept American Express cards, and American Express is offering $100 in free advertising to the first 10,000 companies to sign up for the program.

The advertising program is set up to mimic Google’s successful AdSense platform, as well as a similar program on Facebook. But that’s where the Facebook mimicry ends: in an interview with the Associated Press Thursday, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo reiterated previous comments about the company’s plans to file an initial public offering.

“I don’t look at what other companies are doing,” he said. “We don’t think in terms of building this company for a particular IPO date. We are trying to build this company for the long term.”

Previously, advertisers had to go through a sales representative to purchase ads, which are called “promoted tweets” on the site. Despite the extra steps, advertisers have flocked to the program.

Glennz Tees, an online merchant in Austin, Texas, told the Associated Press that December sales doubled after they started advertising on Twitter. The company posted just three ads a week and, in addition to the sales boost, saw the number of followers of its Twitter account triple.

Research firm EMarketer expects Twitter to generate revenue of $260 million this year, nearly twice the $140 million it generated last year.

Zynga is in talks to partner with other portals in a bid to wean itself off the Facebook teat.

The company is the largest game developer on Facebook and raised $1 billion last year in an initial public offering of its stock. But investor enthusiasm has been lackluster since then, in large part because the company, which credits 90% of its sales to Facebook, is seen as being too dependent on social networking giant. Facebook takes a 30% cut of virtual wares sold in Zynga games.

Citing unnamed sources, Bloomberg News says Zynga is now set to launch a publishing program in March that will let other game developers advertise their games on a separate Web portal. Zynga would keep a percentage of sales for games sold through its site.

The new site also allows Zynga to hedge some of the risk and expense it has taken on to develop new, best-selling games. The model of marketing games made by outside developers is similar to the model used by many console game makers, like Electronic Arts.

The company announced “Project Z” at a company event in October, according to Bloomberg. At the time, Chief Executive said the strategy was aimed at decreasing reliance on Facebook and building “a direct relationship with consumers whether they are on the Web or mobile.”

One of the reasons Google makes its Chrome browser is to push the Web forward relentlessly. Google engineers aren’t afraid to do things like invent new formats for Web images or build WebGL-powered 3D maps of the world, even if most of our systems aren’t ready for it.

But in the interest of a faster, more capable Web, Google builds it anyway, and it encourages developers to contribute. It hosts a gallery of Chrome Experiments (with the tagline “Not your mother’s JavaScript.”) where it encourages developers to go nuts stretching these new Web technologies to their limit.

Today, the Chrome team highlighted a super-trippy demo by German computer science grad student Felix Woitzel, which uses WebGL to simulate the movement of crazy, colorful fluids using patterns modeled by the great mathematician Alan Turing. You can tickle it with your mouse, and it moves.
