You can have all the web design skills and talent there is, but it doesnt mean much if you cant use it. That is, you have to have clients, otherwise your skills are of no monetary value to your business.
So, as an independent designer, how do you find more business and clients? Where do you look? And most importantly, how do you ensure that they keep coming? Being able to answer these questions will spell the very difference between your survival as a freelance web designer and failure. It is important enough to put the time and research into finding those clients. This ensures future sustainability and profitability for your business.
It all starts with marketing and networking. One of the biggest mistakes that self-employed designers make is to assume that because they have a business, automatically means they are employed. Wrong! Having a business is one thing, and actually finding business to do is quiet another. It is the latter that really matters.
As part of your initial business plan, you have to have a solid marketing strategy. Who will you target? Who do you think needs your web design service? It is not as easy as sitting by your phone and email and waiting for clients to contact you for work. If it was that easy, more people would have done it, and less freelance designers would have failed in this endeavor. Start with family and friends who have businesses. Who doesnt have a website? Whose website needs some rework? Make a list of all of these potential clients and start contacting them.
As a start, invest as much, if not more time in marketing and networking, as you would on the actual design work. It is a worthy investment for the long term.
