IFO file is an information file in a DVD. It is basically a DVD data file. File extension ifo represents many types of file formats. One of the important types is VMGI- Video Manager Information file contained in a DVD and acts as a source for the DVD player. It is used by information files in video disks. Information like layout of the movie chapters, screen to be shown at the startup, location of audio tracks and subtitle streams information is contained in these IFO files.
The contain entries where the most common type is PGC which describes chapter sequences of different versions of the movie. They cannot be opened directly but they are used by different players like WINDVD, Cyberlink and PowerDVD etc. While copying the video data to other DVD or harddrive IFO files are read.
If there is a damage in the optical media which contains the file then player can make use of BUP files which are nothing but backup files. But if the back up files is damaged then the disk becomes completely unreadable.

Roxio Roast is used to open the extension on the Mac OS, DVD player from Apple can also be used. NeroShowtime, WinDVD can be used on the windows platform. When you access a DVD drive there will be two directories AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. VIDEO_TS.IFO file contains the playback and control information for the whole DVD. This file is called the video manager information file.
If the IFO files cannot be opened there might be registry errors or may be the right programs are not installed. You can scan your system to prevent, identify and repair the IFO associated errors. There are some recommendations for the IFO users:
1) For memory optimization and cpu usage for file extension ifo a free performance scan can be run.
2) If IFO errors are fixed then system becomes more stable.
3) Drivers which are outdated also might be responsible for slowdown of the system so scan your system for outdated drivers.
IFO file extension can be normally used by number of applications or programs as it is an abbreviation which means information. Any number of data types can be present. The file can be opened and scanned to find the information about the creator.
