Unless Google lets me change my email address from captaincurk to jonas.huckestein I will never appreciate webfinger.

I have lots of services under my nickname google account but I want to also use my real name sometimes…

“While OpenID associates your identity with a URL, WebFinger links your identity to your email address.”

That’s somewhat accurate, but doesn’t fully explain the nuance. One of the services you can advertise via WebFinger is an OpenID endpoint. So WebFinger helps bridge email addresses (or things which look like them) to OpenID.
