At times it feels like the concept of cloud computing is as ephemeral as a towering cumulus cloud on a summer day. It passes by, changes shape and looks different to every person who views it. But like those clouds in the sky, there’s a lot of complexity out there, especially as it concerns how data is managed in a multi-tenant environment.
The issue keeps coming up. First off, there are no existing standards for moving data in the cloud. Third party vendors like CloudSwitch are providing ways to “drag and drop,” data from on-premise to a cloud environments. But there is just no standardized way to move information between cloud networks …

The move to virturalization leaves stone is being left unturned. It touched the public network via EC2 (and now a host of hosts) it formed the Cloud and fused a new generation of the Internet. Service orientated also hits the data centers and this means things like switches, servers, and disk.
At the core of the movement of virtualization movement is freedom of the physical environment. Optimize hardware performance and set the workload free. In the process of doing this, a promise of cost savings has set a off a storm in re-factoring the data center.
This is the first in a series of posts taking a look at areas of the data center and how an openness strategy become a driver for winning customers by bringing costs down …

Microsoft President Stephen Elop says the cloud has created a “constructive disruption,” in the market, creating an opportunity to offer Microsoft Office on the Web at no cost.
It also looks like the cloud is disrupting Microsoft’s pricing structure quite a bit. The issue: cloud computing may be the future but the margins will drop …

A look at outages for cloud computing services over the past two years shows that most are minimal, a subset of the entire network. Very few cloud outages have caused massive data losses.
But after reviewing most of these outages, it’s clear that cloud service providers are still adjusting to how they do upgrades or estimate loads to the network when doing maintenance. We saw these issues arise more than once.
The results stem from research conducted by Mark Williams, a cloud computing consultant based out of the United Kingdom who is writing a book about cloud computing. Overall duration of the outages are based upon Williams research. He is actively looking for more instances of outages and is asking people to report examples of problems …

IBM announced today a set of cloud services that will allow developers to develop and test cloud applications. In addition, IBM is offering free compute and storage for developers using the IBM platform.
IBM Smart Business Development and Test on IBM Cloud is designed to remove burdens from developers who spend a lot of time setting up their own test environments for applications. By using this kind of a cloud service, developers can test in a fraction of the time, compared to more traditional methods …
