Joint adventure of Google and other social networking sites, Open Social is a set of protocol or can be defined as application interface to implement as a core functioning element .Recently Born, this API is said to be a bit of the chunk as its suppose to be a fragment of Googles ambitious social networking project-Maka Maka. Its also said to be as a solution to the challenge imposed by Face book Platform on Google.
Google authorities deny the news of any linkage of OpenSocial with a Hush-Hush project instead they emphasize it to be a beneficial for all and for entire web world.
The thought process behind the development of OpenSocial was to encourage the third party support to encourage the implementation of applications. Its beneficial for developers as well as for websites. Developer shave to do less, learn less in order to build applications and that even can be executed on all social networking sites whereas website assures its far reach and distribution among the internet surfers. Applications which are built by OpenSocial API can be access throughout the web world or on that social network. For instance, if a social networking site is hosting some web features, user can integrate those applications in his website also.
OpenSocial is currently under development and is in alpha stage of testing. Its not an open source project yet and is under Apache 2.0 license.
OpenSocial corroborates four APIs to ensure proper functioning and data accessibility but implies a common framework across cross-platforms. The language codes of this framework are basic HTML and Java Scripts which are faster and simpler. With OpenSocial, user can build application easily, can update feeds and reach out to other networks. Its less complicated and it offers Interactive mini plug-in Google applications as a value feature. Other social networking websites need to turn on support to run OpenSocial applications. User can run any language Java, PHP etc. User can create application in the same way a gadget is created using text editor with JavaScript, APIs etc. Flash Content is also enabled in OpenSocial and can be fully interactive with other users.
Social networking sites which supported open social API are many. Since its inception OpenSocial created a furor among the netizens who follow networking sites religiously, but somehow it proved to be a damp squib. The API was vulnerable to security threats and leakage. According to a source, a hacker cracked its code in less than 20 minutes. It did not support other network well except Orkut and only limited number of gadgets could be executed while others showed error. Google management admitted the technical crunch and promised to make it viable and secure. With the arrival of OpenSocial JavaScript API version 0.6, everything seems steer clear for OpenSocial as it assures to fix al the bugs and problems previous versions has created so far. The new version allows developers easy access to applications and to navigate within profiles and web pages. It includes feature like OpenSocial request which would need authentication or authorized signature for security measures.
