The internet has been growing in all ways, extending its horizons to all places and domains. Right now, among those necessities for the 21st centurys folks is internet access. Getting access to the virtual world is what you would call a basic need; one of those things that you never knew you needed until you found it. And what that means besides better communication and e-possibilities, there is also the need to create a digital identity.
That is done by creating a username and a password which recognizes you only and gives you access to all your favorites, if the site you are registering with is oriented in that direction. That is with no shadow of doubt web technology, creating a virtual you in a few minutes. The problem comes in however when you have to create so many of the usernames and passwords when you want to register with a new site and that is where the challenge comes in. Being only human, there are only so many of the username-password combinations that we can remember. In light with that very situation, there is arising a new solution that has been in the offing for a couple of years now and it is called OpenID.
If anything, this is the real web technology and if the trends are anything to go by then we should be seeing a lot more of it in the near future. In the plainest English, OpenID is what you would call a decentralized system where the user identification is always similar. That means when you register with one site which acts as a provider, for instance yahoo, Google or even PayPal, those very details can be used when you want to register with another site. This means that you do not have to go creating virtual identities at every site you visit since the one that you created with the provider sites will be the one used. In essence, with one log in, you are free to access and enter into multiple sites. If simplicity had a description, then this would be it.
In the words of those online traders that have employed the standard, then they know for sure the business value tagged to OpenID. Online shopping is made simpler. The users also have an easier time since they do not have to go submitting credentials every now and then. With a simple click to approve the authentication, the site is able to get all the details concerning you. That is a time saver.
It all sounds good but like with every new web technology, there are usually challenges that may arise and this are in the form of phising attacks. Typical with the internet since security is always an issue; and a major one at this point since access to a persons details may cause untold problems. But all in all OpenID is the new thing in town. It creates an easy environment for both users and business people and that is by all means good news.
