Google wave is a recent real time communication application from Google. Though the application is still under development and yet to be launched in the market it is being touted as the next big thing in the arena of instant communication platforms. Google wave offers instant messaging, email, web chat, project management tools and social networking applications all in one.
Some ground-breaking features of Google wave are:
It is Real time: Though most of the instant messaging applications are real time, Google wave take this technology a notch above. Instead of whole text, you will be able see what one is typing character by character.
It can be embedded: You can embed your Google wave into a third party blog or website just like youtube videos. Google wave embed will have most of the actual Google wave functionalities like file drag and drop.
Extensions and Applications: Like your Facebook quizzes and iGoogle gadgets you can build your own applications and extensions like real time games within your wave.
Editable: Like in Wikipedia, anything written in your Google wave can be edited by anyone else because of the shared conversations within the platform. This means you can edit, comment and append information in an ongoing conversation.
An open source application: Being open source the developers can toy with the application in several ways to advance it further.
Playback functionality: The playback functionality allows users to go back to check what was said, just like the conversation history.
Advanced Spelling and language tools: The advanced spelling and language tools have context specific autocorrect and auto translate functionality.
File drag and drop functionality: This is a common standard amongst most of the real time communication platforms. Google wave also offers file drag and drop functionality.
Like all Google applications, Google wave also comes with its own set of lexicon:
Wave: A single thread of conversation between individuals, group of users or robots is known as wave. The whole conversation history between two users will be one wave.
Wavelets: These are subsets of bigger group of waves. Like in an instant messenger a wave is the whole conversation and smaller parts of that conversation is a wavelet.
Blip: One single message is called a blip. Blip is the smallest part of the wave. The only difference between a blip and instant message is that you do not have to send a blip, it would automatically publish itself. Blips can have other blips associated with them, these are called the children.
Documents: The text or the file within a blip is known as documents.
Extensions: These are smaller applications within a wave, like a game or quiz that you can play while using a wave. There are primarily two types of extensions: Robots and Gadgets.
Gadgets: These extensions are a lot like iGoogle gadgets and face book applications, users can participate in these applications most of them Googles open social platform.
Robots: These are automated participants that talk with the user, interact with the waves, furnish stock and twitter updates.
Embedded wave: You can embed your Google wave into a third party blog or website just like youtube videos. Google wave embed will have most of the actual Google wave functionalities like file drag and drop.
