Finland, a land of just 5 million people was heavily dependent on just mining and lumbering to drive its economy. Something as erratic as that had suddenly changed with a 28 billion dollar company spearheading the great cell phone revolution. Home to the worlds largest mobile phone company and call center provider, Finland is certainly moving and moving fast thanks to Nokia which itself had started as a lumbering business. Growth of mobile phone industry in Finland is evident from the fact that almost half of the countrys GDP comes from Nokia and 15% of the exports too.
Popularly called teddy bears in the land of thousand lakes, the cell phones are everywhere in Finland with 80% of the population owning at least one piece. At 35% of the worlds share, almost 400 million cell phones are churned out of Nokia every year, which has economists worried about the fate of the country which is more like a township for the cell phone giant and whose prosperity heavily depends on the success and growth of the mobile phone leader. This is obvious from another fact that tells us that 70% of the Finnish population which is rich has made its money through Nokia directly or indirectly.
Finnish people are known for their love of cell phones and are said to suffer from Eurosclerosis that has signs such high wages and a high employment rate. The taxes and social security costs are high too and as Nokias stock is steadily decreasing over the last couple of years even as it is trying to scramble with its wireless devices, more than a few Finnish communities are slightly concerned. A large part of the Finnish tax base too is derived from Nokia. 20000 people nearly work for companies that survive in Finland through contracts from Nokia. 22,000 of the total 54000 employees of Nokia are from Finland, which also includes 11,000 of the top brass executives and research staffs that could move out if required, one of the reasons, over dependence on Nokia jeopardizes the future of Finland, even as the high wealth has changed some of the older traditions.
